Returning to Myself gives Brandi Carlile's voice a range of settings, from close, reflective passages to arrangements that open around a larger chorus. The songs consider identity, relationships and the passage of time through concrete details rather than distant abstractions. Changes in instrumental color support that focus, allowing the record's quieter observations and more expansive moments to feel equally personal.
