John Coltrane “Ballads” LP

Ballads puts the focus on tenor and soprano saxophone, modal development, harmonic intensity, and spiritual searching.

• Coltrane's classic quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones turns away from extended harmonic workouts toward concise standards.
• The emphasis is on tone, melody, and lyrical phrasing, revealing the tenderness that could sit beside the quartet's more intense work.
• The album remains one of the most accessible entries into Coltrane's Impulse! period.

For fans of Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, and Pharoah Sanders.
