Lee Morgan “Sidewinder” (Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series) LP

Sidewinder puts the focus on hard-bop trumpet, blues-rooted phrasing, and a strong feel for soul-jazz grooves.

• Lee Morgan is joined by Joe Henderson, Barry Harris, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins for a session that balances hard bop with a deep soul-jazz groove.
• The title track rides a memorable boogaloo pulse, while the rest of the album gives Morgan and Henderson plenty of room for sharply shaped solos.
• Its unexpected commercial success helped make soul-jazz grooves a bigger part of Blue Note's mid-1960s identity.

For fans of Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, and Art Blakey.
