Recorded during 2008 and 2009, then shelved as Dear moved toward Black City.
Fingerpicked guitars and small acoustic instruments meet the looping structures of his electronic production.
"Muscle Beach," "Hikers Y," and "Supper Times" connect country-folk influences with experimental pop.
For fans of: Beck, Arthur Russell, and Matthew Dear's Asa Breed.
This once-shelved set catches Matthew Dear exploring a loose, guitar-centered approach to songwriting. His deep voice moves through twanging loops, tambourine rhythms, and playful studio textures, carrying traces of the folk and country music his father introduced him to. Dear applies a producer's ear for repetition to material with an unusually personal, homespun character.
The songs move from the running narrative of "Muscle Beach" to the hypnotic pulse of "Hikers Y" and the drifting, dreamlike turns of "Supper Times." It is an engaging alternate route through Dear's catalog, with the spontaneous feel of an artist testing possibilities before settling into his next phase.
