Portals gives Melanie Martinez's character-driven pop a more expansive and otherworldly setting. Electronic rhythms, distorted textures and delicate melodic passages create a changing backdrop for the songs. The album's recurring imagery ties those contrasts together, letting its fantasy world carry recognizable feelings of uncertainty, release and the search for a different version of oneself.
