Hurley’s 1964 debut presents his singular songwriting with only voice and acoustic guitar.
Introduces “The Werewolf Song,” “Blue Mountain,” “The Tea Song,” and “Just a Bum.”
Remastered by Mike Monseur and presented in a classic Folkways tip-on jacket.
First Songs contains the early outlines of Michael Hurley’s unusual musical world. Recorded when he was twenty-two, the album draws on folk balladry and country blues while already revealing a voice and imagination that feel entirely his own.
The performances are sparse and unhurried, leaving room for the grain of Hurley’s singing and the small rhythmic details of his guitar. Familiar characters and themes begin here, from wandering and wine to the haunting werewolf figure he would revisit throughout his career. The reissue restores a foundational document of American outsider folk.
