Miles Davis “Birth of the Cool” LP

Birth of the Cool puts the focus on trumpet-led modern jazz, from hard bop and modal playing to orchestral and electric experimentation.

• The nonet sessions bring together players and arrangers including Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, Max Roach, John Lewis, and Gil Evans.
• French horn and tuba expand the palette beyond the standard bebop combo, favoring blended ensemble color and carefully shaped counterpoint.
• These recordings helped establish the vocabulary that became associated with cool jazz.

For fans of John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter.
