In the Aeroplane Over the Sea makes intimate singing and unruly ensemble sound feel part of the same emotional gesture. Jeff Mangum's acoustic songs can open into brass, distortion and urgent rhythms, with vivid images moving through the words. The record's rough edges preserve a feeling of discovery, allowing its tenderness and intensity to arrive with equal force.
